A student is generally a person authorized by a study permit or immigration regulations to study in Canada who is studying or intends to study

Certain activities are generally not treated as formal studies requiring a study permit, including:

  • Attending preschool.
  • Taking general-interest or self-improvement courses.
  • Participating in qualifying distance-learning programs.
  • Auditing academic courses without earning credits.
  • Taking recreational courses included in tourist packages.
  • Attending qualifying settlement and integration courses
